  1. They don't kill you unless you light them, And I've never lit one. It's a metaphor see. You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do it's killing."

This quote shows me just because you have something deadly in your possession doesn't mean you have to use it or even feed in to whatever the situation is. I agree with Augustus when he mentions this in Chapter 1. I believe John Green will bring this quote or symbol back later in the novel.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things i can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

The serenity prayer is a prayer that helps you feel better with the things that you cannot change. I think the author put this in the novel because the characters all have cancer and they can't change it, but they can, make it alot better. I like this quote because you can't change the world, and you can't change the people in the world.

"I fear it like the proverbial blind an who's afraid of the dark."

This means a blind man who can't see is not afraid of the dark, but a seeing person is probably afraid of the dark as much as that proverbial blind man. This fear is Augustus' oblivion. I think Augustus fears oblivion because he doesn't know what is going to happen next in his life, what is going to happen to him; good or bad. For example: you fall in a deep dark hole. You are going to expect someone to help you because you have always depended on somebody else, then you will be in a situation where you are going to have to pry your own self out of that dangerous and scary situation.

    1. I dont understand..does that mean a seeing person is not afraid of the dark? therefore meaning that Augustus is not afraid of oblivion?

    2. A blind man can see nothing; not even darkness. While we are still living, we cannot know what will happen after death - then we wouldn't be alive anymore! Augustus does not know what oblivion will look like, but he fears it despite this. Thus, the blind man who is afraid of the dark.

My favorite line in this chapter is, "I'm going to a movie with Augustus Waters," I said." Please record the ANTM marathon for me." to me this line is so uplifting and empowering. it is like she has a whole new attitude about making friends. I'm so glad that she met this Augustus Waters and I feel like he is going to have big influence on Hazel' life.

This quote is here to describe how she is taking her life back and becoming a person again. By doing that we have something to look forward to in the book besides misery and death. This quote relates to my life because sometimes I get depressed and I don't feel like doing anything, but when that one person makes my day, I feel so much better. I didn't really know anyone who was sick because the illness took their lives when I was young. So I know two sick people who love each other and how to relate to it.

If I were Hazel I would've done the same thing. I would've done the same thing because I wouldn't want to spend my last minutes watching reruns. I would want to hang out with my friends and spend my last minute with people I love.

I really hope no complications come along the way with Augustus and Hazel because they deserve happiness because they been through so much. May they be happy forever.

A line I liked is when it says " look, let m just sat it: he was hot.A non-hot boy stares at you relentlessly, and it is, at best, awkward and at worst a form of assault, but a hot boy..... well". I can connect to this quote , because it is true. I feel the same way Hazel feel. I can, also connect with this quote, because would think that the person was weird.Another quote I like is
me:" I refuse to go to the support group"
mom:" One of the symptoms of depression is disinterest in activities"
me:" please let me watch ANTM. It an activity"
    mom:"television is passivity"
me:" uh mom please, If you want me be a teenager, don't send me to the support group.Buy me a fake ID, so I can go to the club, drink vodka, and take pot". I like this quote, because that is something I would say to my mother, to try to get what want. I would want to get my way, so being sarcastic seem, like he best way, sometime that work. Hazel is a little like me, but she like to talk about death a lot.The third quote is" I had ridiculously fat chipmunk cheeks fat cheek". I like this quote quote, because I have big cheeks, and I really don't like them and their is nothing I can do about it

  4. I think the question How does language affect how we view the world affect us a lot because a lot of people in the world think that if yo speak a different language you are different. But other people think that the question How does language affects the world a lot because people should not think that you are different just because you speak another language of is a different color. I think that the world should not be affected by the language a person speak because everybody in the world should be treated with equal rights that is why i think language should not affect the world.

I think that different expression means that a person may have a different opinion of a person than you. To me the actually meaning of the different expression is a boy or girl feelings towards something but their feelings are different that is what I think different expression actually means to me.

Also back to the question does language affects the world I think it really affects the world because a lot of people can not do a lot of things that they want to do because of the way they look or the way that they speak. I think that it really affects the world because a lot of people have dreams to do things but they can not because they way they look or speak.

One quote that stands out to me is on page 19 where it states "But of course there is always a harmartia ad yours is that, oh my God, even though you had freaking cancer you give money to a company in for the chance to acquire yet more cancer". This quote stands out to me because when I first, the first thing that came to my mind was that Hazel cared about Augustus. It also kinda shows to me that Hazel likes him too. I predict Hazel cares about Augustus because if she didn't, she wouldn't had said what she said to him and let him do with he was doing with no complaints. This quote is similar to my life experiences because i have low self esteem and some of my old classmates in my middle school knew that. Sometimes I compare myself to other kids and say why am I'm not pretty like them. I was around one of my best friends when I stated that and she said " why are you doubting yourself. You're pretty Franny. Stop calling yourself ugly." My best friend stating that to me shows that she cares about me and she doesn't like when I doubt myself. Another quote that stands out to me is "Augustus Waters pushed himself out of his wheelchair and walked over to me" This quote also stands out me because it shows the interest that Augustus have for Hazel. Augustus was interested in meeting her and that's kind for someone to get interested in someone who doubts themselves a lot.

  6. “After a while the boy smiled, and then finally his blue eyes glanced away. When he looked back at me, i flicked my eyebrow up to say,I Win”
This line stands out to me because Hazel is like a competitive person. I connect to this quote because i am a competitive person based on that i hate to lose. In this quote she also is like an attractive person and i am very attractive. Also this stand out to me because of her personality and attitude. My personality and attitude is much like hers its just like we perfect in our own ways. Also in the quote they stare at eachother and she gives him a certain look to say i win so that he can kind of like get the picture. This quote also gives you the right to make an inference on that they are flirting. My opinion on this quote is that she hates to lose and lets people know that shes a competitive person. She will also let you know when she has won.
“ If you want me to be a teenager, don’t send to support group. Buy me a fake ID so i can go to clubs, drink vodka, and take pot”
I can relate to this quote because my mom and me negotiate about that type of things about me being a teenager. I always tell my mom that i am a teenager and let me be a teenager and do teenager things. In this quote she wants to be grown to fast and her mom won’t let her. Instead she want Hazel to go to support group. I can connect to this quote by understanding that since she is a teenager she want to do adult things since she is practically almost an adult. I understand this quote because when i first turned a teenager i wanted to grow up too fast and do adult things to but my mother wouldn't let me so i would get mad but now i realize that some things are worth waiting for in life to be an adult.

"I was depressed, presumably because I rarely left the house, spent quite a lot of time in bed, read the same book over and over, ate infrequently, and devoted quite a bit of my abundant free time to thinking about death."
I can relate to this quote, because I usually do this a lot. I never go anywhere, because I'm afraid of being killed or arrested. I eat infrequently, because either I'm reading or under stress. I sometimes over think things such as death or maybe even the most simplest things. I was told that "normal" teenagers don't usually engage in this behavior. I'm not a normal teenager or at least I don't think I am. I don't think I'm what you call "normal", because I don't live up to the stereotypical form of a teenager. Like Hazel, even though I'm not living with a disease, I think about death a lot. Death isn't something that kills the person, but rather a fear that kills many people. I think about death, because it's really the only bad thing I experienced majority of in the past few months. Death to me would be an unwanted friend. The difference between me and Hazel is that I have plenty of chances to be "normal", but I choose not to. My mom forces me to go outside or be social. Nothing good ever comes out of that. I end up feeling depressed, because I feel that I don't fit in with everyone else. Depression to me isn't something that rises from loneliness, but rather feeling unwanted with lack of social development. I feel this way, because I'm different. I live my own life the way that I believe will best suit me. Life isn't easy being a teen. Your always struggling with school, jobs, maybe even relationships. The fact of the matter is that your forced to grow up. I stay to myself to focus on that transition. No I'm not perfect, but that's a number one reason for why I focus on me. Outside people cause conflict and have affects on people. I understand that developing social skills is important, but it can also make my depression worst.

  8. My favorite lines in this passage are:
" Augustus half smiled. "Because you're beautiful I enjoy looking at beautiful people and I decided a while ago to not deny myself the similar pleasures of existence.
"After a while the boy smiled and then finally his blue eyes glanced away. When he looked back at me, I flicked my eyebrows up to say, I win".
These two quotes are my favorite quotes because they tell about young love and how she saw boy that she really liked. This connects to my life because it reminds me of when a cute boy would stare at me and I would stare back. I have had an experience with my boyfriend when we first met like the first quote. He told me that I wad beautiful and that he liked me. These two quotes in my opinion are the cutest quotes in chapter 1 because it tells how they first began talking and those are the times you never want to forget. In the second quote I can connect to this because when me and my boyfriend first met we would always stare at each other but never spoke. I always thought he was adorable just like Hazel thought Augustus was cute. In my opinion I think that Hazel and Augustus will be together because they both like each other a lot. Even though Hazel has cancer, she still has a boy that likes her which reminds me of this movie that this lady had cancer and even though she lost all her hair her husband was still in love with her.

  9. In chapter one there's a metaphorical quote and it actually has you thinking. The quote "You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing, " Is a thoughtful quote. I think it means that when something is going wrong don't make it your life. You have to kill it an don't let it kill you. In the novel the killing thing is the cigarette, which gives you cancer that can kill you. Augustus puts the cigarettes In his mouth and never lights it. A non-lit cigarette can't hurt you but when you light it, it can. Another quote In the book I thought was really cute in a way was " always is there thing. That they'll always love each other and whatever" it's really cute because to tell someone you love them is a big thing and they have their own word for "I love you". Its unique and smart. It's unique because you would never hear someone saying "always" to someone else and keep repeating it. Its smart because you could be around older people and you say "always" they would never know what you're talking about. If You happen to say "I love you" they might give you a speech about love and How your to young for love. These two quotes mean a lot and make sense if you really pay attention to them. In the future if I still remember any of these quotes I'll keep them in mind, for example I will never let anything rule me and take over me so it can "kill me. "

  10. As the story begins Hazel seems to be a very sarcastic girl with stage four cancer. She also seems to be a little bit of a no life. Her life from her point of view is the same old thing. The support group seems like they just go over the same thing every time. Even though Hazel seem to be a miserable type of girl throughout the first part of the chapter but as you continue to read you start to recognize that she is a intelligent young woman to appears to have a understanding of most things people wouldn't know. The metaphor Gus say have a true meaning on how to live your life. The quote as written states '' You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do it's killing." This quote was showing that your are the only person that can control what you do. You are the person that control your fate and your decisions you make that will end show how you choose to live your life. You can make the decision of letting your enemy or as it looks in the book " The Killing" control your own life and live it without out letting " The Killing" affect you in anyway. The first chapter of the book usually suppose to be the introduction of characters but for this book you are already introduced to the main characters true internal and external feelings upon certain things. But characters like Gus and Hazel have pretty much been a open book from the beginning which is different usually from the books I read. Be I can accept change.

  11. I chose two quotes for chapter 1 and one of them states "I fear oblivion". I chose this quotes because I feel the same as the character Augustus. I fear oblivion because oblivion is the state of being completely forgotten or unknown". I fear what is unknown because you never know what there is that have not been discovered yet. When Augustus says this in the story, it immediately catches my attention because I could imagine the way he says it and it also makes me think. I agree with this quote because we do not know what there is to still be discovered or what will happen in the future and it make me wonder and sometimes it can scare me. I think this quote is moving because if it makes you wonder about future things or how the future would be, I believe that it would make someone a deeper thinker or to look into things more. I also chose another quote from chapter 1 that states "Everything that we did and built will be forgotten and all of this". I like this quote because its true, I believe it. I agree with this quote because it makes me think about the future, everything that we built and did will be forgotten, we will not live forever. I think this quote is disturbing because its moving in a way and kind of makes you afraid of the future if you look at it in a different way.

  12. Qoute:"Writing does not resurect. It buries" "You've reached the voicemail of Augustus Waters".

The first qoute "Writing does not resurrect. It buries" This means if you write something, post something, save something somewhere, the writing, negative or positive doesn't save it goes away . The writing goes away, and you won't be able to see it again. But maybe when something buries it, it goes away, but it can be resurrected. The second qoute "You've reached the voicemail of Augustus Waters". This means Hazel had called Augustus and his voicemail came on. She just wanted to here the sound of his voice one more time. Knowing Augustus died she probably felt like this is the end of the world an nobody loves me. Hazels parents love her, and she doensn't believe that. I have had an experience similar to Hazel, when my aunt died, and i had called her,and i thought she was going to answer and she didn't answer. I started crying i forgot she had died. I also agree with both qoute. The fact that Hazel was mad at the fact that she called Augustus and he didn't answer was so sad. If i was Hazel i would be very sad also. It was heartbreaking when Hazel was like" the dead air was eerie" She finally hung the phone up and she started to cry
