  3. The quote that stands out to me best is stated “My dad grabbed me just above the knee and cut me a disapproving look, but from the row behind me, someone muttered almost inaudibly near my ear, “What a load of horse crap, eh, kid?” I spun around. Peter Van Houten wore a white linen suit, tailored to account for his rotundity, a powder-blue dress shirt, and a green tie. He looked like he was dressed for a colonial occupation of Panama, not a funeral”. This quote stand out to me because First why Is Peter Van Houten there? The way he was talking to Augustus and Hazel when they visited Him in Amsterdam and how he just treated them period. Why would he want to be at his funeral? I’m guessing he was there to show his support. Or maybe just to talk trash about the service. Well the good thing is he did travel all the way from Amsterdam to come to a funeral. I thought he would never do such thing after Augustus and Hazel visited him. My main focus on this quote was what made him come to Gus Funeral? Did he feel bad about what he had done to them? Or did his assistance made him come? How come she wasn’t there? Did she have to watch over the house while he was gone? So many questions come to my mind about this quote. I wouldn’t believe someone like Peter Van Houten would show up to his fan funeral that he didn’t care about. I just want to know what made him come. It seems pretty odd.

  4. A quote i like is"okay i said okay". I like this quote because hazel is saying forever know they are seperated now. Hazel did not want to come to the funeral. Also hazel just want it to be him and her.another qoute i like is" i did not want to see him in the ground".I like this quote because that is hard for someone to watch.I rhink it will be hard for hazel to get over it.

Also that i felt bad for peter van houten because hazel wasn't being polite but her should have shown up acting how he was acting. i also didn't like how he just kept drinking like he wasn't in a funeral. this quote got me angry but some things in life don't go your way so you have to respect it.

  6. “It’s total bulls***,” he said. “The whole thing. Eighty percent survival rate and he’s the twenty percent? Bulls***. He was such a bright kid. It’s bulls***. I hate it. But it was sure a privilege to love him huh?” I nodded into his shirt. “Gives you an idea how I feel about you,” he said. My old man. He always knew just what to say.” This is so nice. Seeing Haze and her father bond on such levels. It’s clear that he really loves her and will do anything for. I think if my father was alive that is how he would be with me. But you know it’s different because Hazel is sick, therefore she needs more love and attention then I need. This is so cute. But he’s also right, you know. Sometimes some of them most talented and brightest people get sick and it’s a curse. I love how she’s such a daddy’s girl at time. It must be really hard for her parents to basically watch her die. But he is right both Hazel and Gus were very bright kids and it must be a privilege to love someone who’s that amazing. If I were there friend I would’ve made a eulogy for him too. My eulogy would’ve said Dear Gus, what a privilege it is to be in your life, you were so smart and an awesome friend. I hope that you are resting peacefully in heaven but if you’re not, don’t trip we’ll be there soon

  8. The quote that stood out to me the most was “The minister called up Isaac, who was much more serious than he’d been at the prefuneral. “Augustus Waters was the Mayor of the Secret City of Cancervania, and he is not replaceable,” Isaac began. “Other people will be able to tell you funny stories about Gus, because he was a funny guy, but let me tell you a serious one: A day after I got my eye cut out, Gus showed up at the hospital. I was blind and heartbroken and didn’t want to do anything and Gus burst into my room and shouted, ‘I have wonderful news!’ And I was like, ‘I don’t really want to hear wonderful news right now,’ and Gus said, ‘This is wonderful news you want to hear,’ and I asked him, ‘Fine, what is it?’ and he said, ‘You are going to live a good and long life filled with great and terrible moments that you cannot even imagine yet!’” Isaac couldn’t go on, or maybe that was all he had written” (pg. 271-272). This quote stood out to me the most because Isaac spoke his heart out and that’s the part that I really liked it’s was amazing. The best thing is his expanded vocabulary that stood out to me it was incredible. Isaac made Augustus feel like a peace maker to all of his friends. Augustus puts a smile on everyone’s face; Isaac makes it seem like Augustus his best and only friend in the whole world makes life worth living for.

    1. The quote "Without pain we couldn't know joy" this was the quote Hazel used in her eulogy. This quote means that without pain how could we know right from wrong and we could not learn from our mistakes and how to fix them also with pain you can also feel better about yourself and move on from depression to happiness and be happy what you have left

  9. The quote that stuck out to me in this chapter was one of the quotes in Augustus house Hazel used in her eulogy. The quote was " Without pain, we couldn't know joy" This quote stuck out to me because it his extremely true. This quote goes with the saying " You can't have sunshine without a little rain" or something like that. This quote is true because without feeling pain or experiencing pain you will never learn from your wrongs to make right. Unless you are perfect and lets face it none of us aren't then you would need to learn from your mistake but if you are a normal human then when you do experience something that hurts you you will end up learning from it which will make you a better person.

  10. Chapter 22
Hazel attends Gus actually funeral. I like this chapter because I think Hazel feels some closure because of going to AugustusWater’ s funeral. I know that Hazel heart is hurting from her lost and everyone else that knew Gus but if Hazel was actually person I would try to comfort her and make her feel a lot better in this time period in her life. I don’t really know what it feels like to lose someone the way she did but I don’t know what or how I would act if I lost someone so close to my heart, so I really cannot connect to this but I understand her pain.

  11. What a load of horse crap, eh, kid?” I spun around. Peter Van Houten wore a white linen suit, tailored to account for his rotundity, a powder-blue dress shirt, and a green tie. He looked like he was dressed for a colonial occupation of Panama, not a funeral.” This qoute suprised me because why would Peter Van Houten be at his funeral, after he was doing all that disrespectful stuff in Amsterdam. After he was getting drunk and not trying to full-fill his promise to answer any questions that they had for him. But the questins that i have for him is, Why was he there? How did he know that he died? Who would contact him so he can go to the funeral and why? Another qoute that suprised me was, ...everyone had to come up to me and tell me that I’d spoken beautifully, and that it was a lovely service, which was a lie: It was a funeral. It looked like any other funeral. I can realate to this because people do be coming up to you after the funeral and say that was a lovely service, but you know shes in a better place. I would get mad becasue, she is not in a better place a better place is at my school everyday bringing me lunch, at her house down the street from my school watching TV waiting until i get out. Also i would be mad because what is so great about a funeral? Nothing, nothing is great about a funeral. They have your loved one in a casket, playing sad music, all these pictures of you and thhat person that have you thinking like dang and people crying. Sometimes they dont get burried sometimes they get creamated and thats the worst thing to happen to a persons body.

  12. The quote I chose for chapter 22 was “The minister called up Isaac, who was much more serious than he’d been at the pre funeral. “Augustus Waters were the Mayor of the Secret City of Cancervania, and he is not replaceable,” Isaac began. “Other people will be able to tell you funny stories about Gus, because he was a funny guy, but let me tell you a serious one: A day after I got my eye cut out, Gus showed up at the hospital. I was blind and heartbroken and didn’t want to do anything and Gus burst into my room and shouted, ‘I have wonderful news!’ And I was like, ‘I don’t really want to hear wonderful news right now,’ and Gus said, ‘This is wonderful news you want to hear,’ and I asked him, ‘Fine, what is it?’ and he said, ‘You are going to live a good and long life filled with great and terrible moments that you cannot even imagine yet!’ Augustus and Isaac are best friends. Augustus was there for Isaac when he was going through the toughest time in his life. That was facing reality that he was blind. Augustus always knew how to make a person’s day with his jokes or even his kind heart. Now that he is gone everybody including Hazel and Isaac can’t imagine life without him. Life is not the same without Augustus Waters. I can reflect to this chapter because it is very sad it’s like Hazel and Augustus didn’t get enough time together before he died. I feel very bad for Hazel, Isaac, and Augustus’s family. They have my blessings.

  13. Chapter 22 was both sad and funny in a way. The quote that stuck out to me in chapter 22 was,"Without pain how would we know joy?" I picked this quote because it related to the most. This quote is also similar to the quote "Without rain there would be no sunshine. This means that everyone has to experience some hardships in order to get to the achievements. Nothing in life is easy you have to work for everything. Sometimes you will fail but it only takes courage to push yourself and try again until you succeed.

  14. The quote that I had chosen form chapter twenty two was when Hazel was talking to Isaac and she says "How are the eyes? Oh excellent, there just not in my head is the problem." The reason I had chosen this quote was because this quote bring back the missing life the novel was lacking of because of the sickness and death of Augustus Waters. I think that this quote was important to the novel because it doesn't make the novel as sad as it was, it bring back a little humor and make the chapter or ending of the book not so serious. This quote also bring back a little life in Hazel also, instead of her always being so deep in what she says and being depressed she actually sounded happy for a second. It shows that both Hazel and Isaac can still laugh and joke a little and not focus so much now on Augustus's death and sickness, instead they can focus on making each other happy and living the rest of their lives with no regrets. This quote also shows the relationship that both Isaac and Have together and best friends who crack jokes on each other that don't offend each other.

  15. In chapter twenty two a line that I like is "How are the eyes? Oh excellent, there just not in my head is the problem." I like this line because it's funny in a way. Lately in the book you don't see the sense of humor between Hazel, Issac , and Gus (before he died). The book became very serious but the author put a few Jokes in to certain chapters. They Are able to make fun of each other but they don't take it to the heart. It reminds me of my family, we make fun of each other all the time even when were sick or we Are in a bad place. I remember when My mom had cancer we made fun of each other. I would talk about her hair and she would talk about me being skinny. We did it to put a smile on our faces. Out was all out of love. Nobody wants to be sad all the time. You have to make fun of a situation at times. I wonder if gus' s death would make her more depressed. I hope it doesn't because she doesn't need to be stressed anymore. I think she's going to die soon. I still think the death was still shocking to Me.

  16. One quote I picked was " The walk felt long, but I kept telling my lungs to shut up, that they were strong, that they could do this." I picked this quote because she perservered through the long walk even though her lungs wanted to give up. She pushes through her illness to get where she wants in life. This reminds me of when my mom had a back injury but my mom never stopped caring, loving and doing what she needs to do to keep me safe and a roof over my head. My mom basically wanted to give up but she didnt because everytime she saw me she knew what she needed to do. Hazel put her illness on hold for the love of her life once he died she had to think about herself now because there was no one to take care of now. Hazel believed that her lungs could make it against this long walk. She was very optimistic about her lungs during this walk. Before this hazel was very pestimistic thinking she couldnt fo anything. This quote shows that you can do anything once you put your mind to it.

  17. When Hazel said in her eulogy "Without pain we wouldn't know joy" I was reminded of the saying "Everyone wants happiness, no-one wants pain. But you can't have a rainbow without a little rain." I was reminded of this saying because the two are quite similar. When Hazel said that at first I was confused. Gus and Hagel had joy first, then they experienced pain when Gus's cancer came back. But then I realized that in order for them to meet they had to go to the support group and to go there you had to have cancer or had cancer. Every time some thing bad happens people are quick to blame and create self pity and as I see that I wonder why people don't look at the bright side. This will pass, it will get better ,you just have to grow a thick skin. Hazel must've been pretty in love to "forget herself" like that. She was completely selfless after Amsterdam and maybe she WAS being selfish after Amsterdam because the reason why she wanted to be with Gus is because she wanted him to herself.

  18. "Omnis cellula e cellula, "he said again. "All cells come form cells. Every cell is born of a previous cell, which was born of previous cell. Life come from life. Life begets life begets life begets life begets life". This qoute means every cell comes from a cell. Every cell is born or originated from the cell that came from the previous cell. I guess that means the cells life came from life. I agree with this qoute . The next qoute "So dawn to day". I dont understad this qoute at all, but i don't know why Peter Van Houten even mentioned about the cell scenario, why didnt' he use a scenario using people. The next qoute meas the same things it says also. Also Peter Van Houten was wrong to make Hazel and Augustus came to his house and he wouldn't tell him the rest of the sequel and blew them both off.
