  1. “I went over to his house about noon, after he had eaten and puked up breakfast. He met me at the door in his wheelchair, no longer the muscular, gorgeous boy who stared at me in Support Group, but still half smiling, still smoking his unlit cigarette, his blue eyes bright and alive.” This is so sad to watch the person you love go from cute and cuddly to thin and sick. I don’t know if I could’ve sat through that because I’m too sensitive. I wish I could be Hazel’s friend so that she could have someone her age to lean on but since I’m not in the book I can’t do anything to help her and it’s KILLING me because I like helping people. If I were Hazel I would try to help him all I can. I just wish that the cancer wasn’t in his whole body so that maybe the doctors can do something to help him but they can’t. This book really got me think about what it would be like if I were to have cancer (GOD FORBID!) but I don’t think that I could’ve been that strong. This is very similar to what we talked about in class on the 11th. We discussed how things and people change after the climax and before the climax. Gus has changed a significant amount , he’s not the pretty boy we all remember him as being, now he’s getting the life sucked out of his fighting body.

  2. The quote that stands out to me best is stated “no longer the muscular, gorgeous boy who stared at me at Support Group, but still half smiling, still smoking his unlit cigarette, his blue eyes bright and alive”. This quote stands out to me because first I wonder what she means by that. She may mean that the cancer has taken over his good looks and muscular body because now he sleeps al lot and he’s in a wheelchair. Did the chest pain he was having led in the wheelchair or was it that he was over working his legs. It’s very upsetting news that Augustus has cancer because it’s affecting his life. He sleeps more, he can’t walk and now he throws up his food. The good part overall is that he is still alive. But the cancer is affecting his body very badly. Now I feel that Augustus wouldn’t be able to live that long anymore because he had cancer, got rid of it and got it back. Him throwing up being sleepy more and doing less walking is all the effects of the cancer and to me it hurts when you throw up. The cancer made him less muscular and weaker. He may not be taking more care of himself now because of the affects that’s taking over his body. That may be causing him to look less gorgeous. But what I think about Augustus is that he’s still himself it’s just a weaker and sicker version of him.

  3. “I slept quite a lot. I want to write you a sequel, Hazel Grace, but I’m just so damned tired all the time.” “You can just tell it to me,” I said. “Well, I stand by my pre–Van Houten analysis of the Dutch Tulip Man. Not a con man, but not as rich as he was letting on.” “And what about Anna’s mom?” “Haven’t settled on an opinion there. Patience, Grasshopper.” Augustus smiled." I chose this part in chapter 16 because even though Augustus has full body cancer and he changed a little, the way he looks at Hazel hasn't really changed. He still remembered his promise from when they were in Amsterdam. This is important to me because times like this, I feel like they are bound to be gone any day. Augustus is going to keep his promise to stick around as long as he can, just for Hazel. Another scene I chose in chapter 16, "His parents were quiet, watching him, never looking away, like they just wanted to enjoy The Gus Waters Show while it was still in town." This scared me because of the way she put it, I knew exactly what it meant. Now, every move they make is going to be watched by Augustus parents because they are so worried that if they take their eyes off him for 1 second, something is going to happen to him. I feel as his cancer is progressing, they will start becoming as Hazel described her mom very earlier in the book. I hope Augustus can stick around for a while.

  4. The quote that stands out to me is” We ate lunch with his parents at the dining room table. Peanut-butter and-jelly sandwiches and last night’s asparagus. Gus didn’t eat. I asked how he was feeling. “Grand, “he said. “ And you?” “Good. What’d you do last night?” “I slept quite a lot. I want to write you a sequel, Hazel Grace, but I’m just so damned tired all the time.”(pg.234). This quote stood out to be because that sounds like some think a bore person would want to do. They all have very crazy taste buds like Andrew Zimmern from Bizarre Foods. I have a feeling that Hazel and the others could beat Andrew Zimmern at his game, I think that if Hazel and the others made a show like Andrew Zimmern they would get more viewers from just eating something like that a peanut-butter sandwich and asparagus. At least Gus’s parents are giving him the right kind of nutrients like the greens and from the peanut-butter. I wonder were the parent just tired and lazy not to fix and actual lunch that Andrew Zimmern wouldn’t eat on his show. Another reason this quote stood out to me is because I’m not quite sure why Hazel wants a sequel from Gus as soon as possible is it because Augustus infinity is shorter than Hazel’s infinity. Why does Hazel want this sequel so much, it doesn’t sound like Hazel is asking anyone else to write a sequel like Isaac, I think that Hazel and Augustus has too much good of a bond right now for sure.

  5. A quote i like is "i wa.t to write you hazel grace a sequel, but im just so dam tired". I like this quote because gus is starting to lose energy. And i start to dee the difference from gus then and now.

  6. “I slept quite a lot. I want to write you a sequel, Hazel Grace, but I’m just so damned tired all the time.” This qoute is so sad because it reminds me of my mother. Like the week before she died she would get sleepy and would not want to do anything but stay in the bed. Then the day before we were on the phone talking about how on Friday we were going to go to Iverson Mall and go shopping and she was going to get my hair, nails and feet done. Also i was going to get a Chris Brown CD. The sad part about it was that the last thing i said to her was 'I love You". The next day they told us and it was crazy and i didn't believe it because i was just talking to her like yesterday, i didn't know that somebody that you love and need in your life would just leave it so fast.

  7. My favorite quote from chapter 16 is " It crossed my mind to fake a choking incident or something so that he might give me the Heimlich. Maybe then he could get rid of himself of this fear his life had been lived and lost for no greater good. But then I realized him being physically unable to Heimlich, and me having to reveal that it was all a ruse, and the ensuing mutual humiliation." This is my favorite quote because it is telling how Hazel wanted to pretend as though she was having a heart concern so that Augustus could help her, but then she realized that Augustus might not be able to help her, and she would have to sit their feeling humiliated. This quote is funny but sad. It is funny because it's telling how he wont be able to help her, and she would just sit their while he was scared that she was really dying. But then this quote is sad because it tells how Augustus cant even help his own girlfriend if she really did have heart problems.

  8. In this chapter hazel goes over Gus house a lot to spend time together. I like how she isn't giving up on him. Things have changed from when they first starting going over to Agustus house to hang out. Augustus is very sick unlike before. I noticed that Gus parents Hover over them and check up on them a lot. I think that are becoming a little over protective when it come to Augustus. It's really cute how hazel stills spend time time with him like playing video games and taking naps. They are very supportive and encouraging. My favorite quote is when Agustus tells hazel that he wants to write a sequel to AIA for her. He knows how she really loves the book and it's special that he cares so much about her to please her with a sequel to her favorite book. I predict that maybe they will try to write a sequel together. Hazel and Gus could die at any moment there story is like AIA and they probably don't even realize it. My least favorite part about this chapter is how they can't go skating and bowling like regular teenagers spending time but instead they have to do things like nap and play video games because of the challenges they face with having cancer.

  9. In chapter 16 a line that I like is " I slept quite a lot, I want to write you a sequal Hazel Grace, but im just so damn tired all the time." This line is so sad because Gus is dying and he cant do anything. Gus changed and you could tell. This brings back memories of when my mom had cancer. She was so weak , she couldn't even do anything. It got to the point where my siblings and I had to take care of her and ourselves. Gus can't take care of his self he's dependent like my mom was. Hazel is sad because it, she knows he's about to die and he gets weaker everyday. I wonder if Hazel is going to get worst before our after Gus dies. She doesn't even stress over herself anymore , all she can do is stress over him. I think that would make her a little worse because of all the stress.

  10. "His parents were quiet, watching him never looking away, like they just wanted to enjoy The Gus Waters show while it was still in town". This quote is gives a funny tone to it because his parents never looked away becausr they thought something was gonna go wrong if they did. He needs to be watched 24/7. You never know whats gonna go wrong. His life is precious yo everyone now. His parents watch him like its a show because of his condition. Augustus's cancer is very bad because of what he has been through back and forth to the hospital but still manage to stay alive and smile for Hazel

  11. A quote that stuck out to me in Chapter 16 was, "His parents were quiet, watching him never looking away like they just wanted to enjoy The Gus Waters show while it was still in town. This quote is sad to me, because it seems as if Gus' parents are slowly watching him die. I understand that they want to cherish the moments left with him, but he still deserves to live his life with some privacy. Augustus' parents became Hazel's parents. Her parents use to constanty watch and check on her like his parents are constantly watching him now. I don't understand how this will help them remember Augustus better, when I'm pretty sure they have many memories of him already. I would tell my mom to not watch me like and continue on with hers, because someone will need memories of her and to remember me like I was because I came, I saw, and I experienced while I could.

  12. Quote: “I wish we had that swing set sometimes”
The reason I pick this quote because it a sense of hope that he want get or see for the finally time. I think what Hazel is trying to say is that she wish she go back as being a child because she didn’t have to do as much as she didn’t have to do as much as she is doing now and what I mean is that she didn’t have to worry about a boyfriend or doing stuff that she do now. I can tie this to me because I wish I can see my grandmother for one time because she died in car accident and I say be grateful of what you got because a lot of people don’t get what you got today in this world.

  13. "I slept quite a lot, i want to write a squeal hazel grace, but i am just so damn tired all the time" this quote really stands out to me because Augustus is dying and still wants to do things for hazel. Also because i don't want Augustus to die because then hazel isn't going to have nobody like she had Augustus. also because Augustus i think feels bad for not writing a squeal for hazel but he cant do it because he is to weak. "i am sorry, i told him 911 what is your emergency?" this quote is a good quote because hazel didn't want Augustus to be hurt so he didn't want her to call 911 but she did it because she loves Augustus. hazel and Augustus is meant for each other and i think that hazel calling 911 was a great idea to help out her lover.

  14. Chapter 16
This part of the book, Hazel goes over to hang out with Augustus daily because she knows he is going to die. He tells her that he still wants to write her sequel to An Imperial Affliction, but that he's just so tired and can't find the time to do it. They go outside sometimes and go back inside when he needs meds and food in his G-tube which he will end up throwing back up. The two of them play videogames and take naps together. I think they do that to feel like a normal teen couple. Every night she leaves to go home but she back the next day. A question I had in this chapter was why don’t Gus parents let Hazel and him be alone?. A little later my question was answered, they don’t let them be alone because they are afraid something could happen to him when they are not there.

  15. The quote that stood out in this chapter was when Gus said, “Sometimes I dream that I’m writing a memoir. A memoir would be just the thing to keep me in the hearts and memories of my adoring public. “This quote stood out to me because he still don't understand the fact that he don't need to be remembered by everyone. He really only need to focus on the people who is close to him like Hazel, his parents, Isaac along with the rest of his family. Being remembered isn't everything as long as you have family nothing else is important. Your family is the one that is always behind you helping you when you struggle and teaching you right from wrong. I think Gus thinks he needs to be remembered by everyone because it probably has something to do with the way he treats himself. In my opinion he thinks to highly of himself, which is not a good thing. But when think to the point that you have to make a statement to the world that’s is when the problem starts. When that starts you start to have these urges that will make you do anything to be known. A lot of people have it and most times their way of making them self-known is not the right way.

  16. The quote I chose for chapter 16 is “Sometimes I dream that I’m writing a memoir would be just the thing to keep me in the hearts and memories of my adoring public.” This means to me that Augustus wants to be a legacy not a big legacy just enough for his loved ones to remember him by. He doesn’t want them to remember him by being the sick cancer kid but as an outgoing, funny, and handsome man. He wants his legacy to be known and always kept in the heart of the people who he loved. I can reflect to this because my great aunt is making her legacy by living at the age of 98. She hasn’t died yet so her legacy is still going on each and every day. I really like this quote because it gives a clear example of legacy and that Augustus wants to make his loved ones proud of him in each and every way. He wants to be missed, loved, and never forgotten. Augustus is very strong holding on to his cancer trying to live be life out to the fullest. He’s a soldier for fighting his cancer and living as long as he could for his loved ones.

  17. For chapter sixteen I had chosen this quote "I went over his house about noon, after he had eaten and puked up breakfast. He met me at the door in his wheelchair, no longer the muscular, gorgeous boy who stared at me in support group, but still half smiling, still smoking his unlit cigarette, his blue eyes bright and alive." I had chosen this quote because its really sad to see augustus struggle and knowing that he will die must be devestating to himself and hazel. I feel really bad for what hazel has to go through, I couldn't imagine someone I loved so dearly died just like that from a disease from cancer. Its also really sad seeing hazel suffer from both cancer and Augustus dying, I think that he will be a grenade as also hazel will be too.

  18. The quote that I chose for chapter sixteen is "He met me at the door in his wheelchair, no longer the muscular, gorgeous boy who stared at me in support group, but still half smoking his unlit cigarette, his blue eyes bright and alive". I chose this quote because I like how Augustus is trying to be the old him as much as he can by smoking the unlit cigarette. I also feel bad because that is pretty much all he can do other than ride in his wheelchair, puke up his food, and rarely play video games. Also, I like how Hazel seems to care more for Augustus' cancer than her own. She is becoming less self centered and more caring since Augusts' cancer has returned.

  19. “I slept quite a lot, I wanted to write you a sequel Hazel Grace, but I’m just so damn tired all the time.” This quote means that the cancer that he has is making him weaker and weaker. He wants to do something for Hazel but can’t. He really cares for Hazel and really wants to show her how much by writing her a sequel. The cancer is making him more tired than he was and that means it’s getting worse making life for him hard to focus on him and Hazel as a couple, and all the fun things they used to do. As the cancer gets worse Augustus is sleeping more than usual which means he doesn’t have enough time or energy to do anything. You can see how he changed from what he used to be.
