  1. “Mom.Sleep.Cancer.Fighting” I think the Author John Green motioned this quote to demonstrate the struggles Hazel has in her life. Hazel said “Mom” to make it seem like she is apart of her down fall, and she is not. Her mom is the person helping her get through what she has to go through. When she says sleep, Hazel just wants to sleep every thing away, and make people forget about it. She likes to be sarcastic which makes her attitude suck. I think the word Cancer can actually mean a lot of things. To me I think it’s an excuse for her to pull. Hazel wants to say I have cancer so I can’t do things, I can’t make friends. She feels like her whole life is over because she has cancer, know it is not. I think she thinks someone is going to judge her because of her disability. When Hazel says fighting she means fighting her cancer. She can’t do it alone, she needs help, but that’s where Augustus comes in. Augustus is the person that helps her through and guides her even though they both have cancer. She wants to help herself but she doesn’t know how to and I’m pretty sure she can’t. I look at this for example, you have a cold and your parents are dragging you to the doctor, you don’t want to go but they are dragging you. All you want to do is sleep moap around like life is over when it really isn’t; it’s just a cold. Then you want to go on, and on about how the cold has you, and you can’t do anything because of the cold. When the cold starts to fade away you wonder how you got there in the first place, how did it you end up with the cold. What caused the problem, and how can you resolve it for the next time. Hazel can’t do that she is stuck with Stage 5 cancer, and an oxygen tank because she can’t breathe well. I think I’m just like Hazel because when I get sick I like to sit In bed not talk to anybody, and just think of life as worthless at that time, I just want to sleep it off, and sleeping it off is not always the answer. I like Hazel because she reminds me of myself, we would probably be the best of friends. I wonder if she is a real person?

My favorite line in this chapter is , " I can tell you like him." I like this line because Hazel is finally being social. I can tell that Augustus makes her feel good and her depression is going away. It's so fun watching her go from a depressed teenage cancer patient to a teenage cancer patient with a crush. I can't wait to see how their relationship progresses.

I can really relate to this line because my aunt can tell how I feel a mile off- she's one of my mothers. I don't know how she does it but I guess we have that type of connection being as though we been together for almost a decade. I feel as though Hazel and her mother are very similar to me and my aunt's relationship. I guess what I am trying to say is I'm happy to have someone who can tell how I feel and we can talk about it and I won't be judged.

If I were in Hazel's shoes, I would be glad to have a mom like hers. This line really shows how strong their connection and bond is. She really does have a great mom and I feel as though she should talk to her mom more. I reel like that because her mom is dealing with a lot of stress with her disease and the funds it takes to keep up with it. I just hope Hazel is grateful.

In the future chapters I hope that she will bond with her mother so if she does pass, she will leave her mother good memories

  4. A quote I like is her mother swooped in and said "Jackie",disapprovingly, but I said"no,no, it is okay"I like this quote, because that is something my niece would do.Like if we see someone with one leg, my niece would point, and say why he look like that, or he funny. I would just tell her not to that, and walk away. I don not understand why little kids do that, especial when the person is right in front of us.Another quote I like is "fairly had the kind of social life, that need to be scheduled down to the minute" This quote remind me of someone, I know who plan every. It could be the smallest thing. I could ask her we goo someone, and she would say I have to wait and see. Little time is better, than no time at all, because a least you you know you saw that person, or spoke with them.Different people deal with death, by laughing, crying, or joking around. There is no correct way to deal with death, but it is good to let out your sadness, instead of holding on pain and grief. A legacy Is something someone leave behind. You do not have to be famous to leave a legacy, you can be anyone. A legacy can be good or bad. Hazel talks about death a lot., she is afraid to die, so she is extra safe.Hazel is upbeat, but also can be depressing. At times she can be sarcastic.

  5. To leave a legacy behind means to leave something behind that made a big impact to the world. For example a legacy I believe that my grandmother left was that she is working hard for the community that we live in because she is trying to make sure that all the kids in our community stay out of trouble and stay in school so they can make something good of their life.

Also I believe you do not have to be famous to leave a mark on the world because anyone can leave a legacy behind if they only do what they believe is right for the world. For example a person can leave a legacy behind if he or she starts a petition to help sick animals, or if people try to help find a cure for cancer. Anyone could try to do those things and they do not have to be famous to accomplish those task.

To me I think you do not have to be famous to leave behind a legacy because you can just do what you believe is right and you do not have to be famous to do anything right. That is why I think you do not have to be famous to leave behind a legacy because any man or woman can leave behind a legacy and they do not have to be famous to do so.

One quote that stood out to me states, "I think my school friends wanted to help me through my cancer, but they eventually found out that they couldn't." This quote stood out to me because by her thinking that, it could be true. I strongly believe that her school friends wanting to help her is beyond nice to help someone go through a serious illness. Hazel school friends can probably help her think and talk about happy stuff instead of talking about death. Her school friends maybe talked to her about their happy experiences in their happy to get a laugh out of her. Hazel school friends maybe tried to boost up her confidence knowing she have low self-esteem. They also may had showed her happy and funny things for interest and smile. Hazel is so depressed about her illness so maybe her school friends wanted so see some happiness in her. I predict that maybe they tried searching up treatments to cure the cancer but then realized that they couldn't. In my personal life I was very sick and my friends wanted to help me go through my sickness. My friends were telling me jokes and we was just having a funny conversation. I was had a good time converting with my friends. They were telling me about their funny life experiences, funny videos, and just making up stuff that was funny. All of that was fun. the only bad part about it was it didn't help me good enough to go through my sickness. My friends were really counting on helping me go through my sickness.
    F.K.

  7. To leave a legacy in my opinion is to leave a mark on the world or to have something that people remember you for. You don't have to be famous to have a legacy because you can be remembered for anything not just that you were talented/ rich. Language affects how we view the world because the way we talk plays a role in our lives. Your individual worth should be based on the way that you carry yourself because if you just do stupid things through out your life then that should be your individual worth. A little time with someone is better than no time with someone because at least you will have memories that you will never get back, at least you will be able to see their face and spend some time with them. Different people deal with grief differently because some people cry and never get over it while others may not cry and will be over it in some days. There is not a correct way to deal with grief because people deal with it different ways. Differences separates you from other people because if you have cancer and someone else dosent they possibly wouldn't want to be friends with you because you have an disease and they wouldn't want people looking at them differently. Being friends with someone who is infected or has a disease will make people look at you different and you wont want people thinking you have cancer just because you hang with someone who does.

A quote that stood out to me was "I can tell you like him." I picked this quote because my friends can tell when I like a person. Hazel talks about Augustus a lot but not to Kaitlyn. Sometimes I don't think my friends know when I like someone, but my actions show it. Kaitlyn can sense that Hazel likes Augustus based on her actions and expressions. Actions can speak louder than words in most cases. For instance when I tell my friends about my crush I have a certain tone in my voice and its almost as if I can sense that person. Talking about Augustus can have a certain affect on Hazel. It may make her feel like she has something or someone to live for. She isn't that sociable anymore after she left school, but Augustus is her new friend. Hazel is open with Augustus more than she is open with Kaitlyn. I think this is because Augustus accepts her for who she is and cares about her. I can tell that Hazel liked Augustus from the very first time they met. She would think to herself about him and get this certain feeling. Then when they talked it was easy to sense the feelings. They have a bond that no one else can feel besides them.

  9. "Anyway, I really did like being alone." This quote is from chapter three. The character Hazel wasn't to big on being social. I'm social but I love being alone. You get to be by yourself and think about everything. Even though I can get kind of emotional when im alone, because I start thinking a lot of things, its very healthy for the soul. Some people read, sing, think etc. when their alone. You can do so much by yourself. To Me being alone is the best thing because at the end of the day you came into this world alone an your leaving alone. Your not always going to have people around so just get use to bring alone. It can do a lot for you.
Another quote I thought was Pretty funny is " Kaitlyn never write open toed shoes. ........ because she felt her second toes were to long......." to me this situation is very funny because it brings back memories. It reminds me of my cousin. She hates her second toe for some reason. She complains that it's longer then her big toe and the little ones. Somebody told her she had geek feet. She wears sandals in the summer but if somebody looks at her feet she gets upset. It makes no sense at all but all I can do is laugh at her.I use to act the same way when I was younger but my cousin is worse. My feet got it together I guess. One thing I can use in life is being alone is the best thing ever and dont make a big deal out of nothing.

  10. The quote I chose for my chapter 3 journal states "Anyway, I really did like being alone". I chose this quote because it reflects my personality because I like being alone, for the most part, also. I also find this quote very true for the character. She doesn't really have friends and I don't really think she states why but I think it's because she thinks they might judge her because she's "not regular". I think me and character act alike in a way because she is very nonchalant and throws everything off her shoulders except for her attitude. Our attitudes are not similar because I'm very bubbly while she is more focused on her cancer, which makes her slightly depressed all the time instead of being happy that she is still alive despite she has cancer. To me, I think the quote is very moving because I like being alone a lot and I like that I could relate to the character in a way. I agree with this quote because sometimes being alone can be a good thing versus being around a lot of people, especially negative people. Sometimes "friends " can get you into a lot of trouble. Hazel has cancer and an oxygen tank so she might even feel like she doesn't belong around "regular kids". She might feel that the other teens would make fun of her because some people are that mean. I think its better to spend time by yourself a lot of times because it gives you time to think over things. But also, sometimes being alone a lot can be a bad thing for some people because it might cause them to over think and get depressed. Like in Hazel's case, i think she needs more friends so she can focus on other things instead of her cancer so she wont be so depressed.
